Exchanges and wallet apps run the same kind of fraud-detection logic as banks: a login from a new IP address, especially one in a different country than your last session, gets treated as suspicious by default. Coinbase, Binance, and Kraken will routinely soft-lock an account or demand extra verification the first time you log in from a hotel in Lisbon after your last session was in Toronto. This isn't a bug — it's the system doing exactly what it's designed to do — but it still leaves you locked out at the exact moment you need access.
Hardware wallets don't have this problem directly since they don't phone home, but the companion desktop apps (Ledger Live, Trezor Suite) do check in with servers for firmware versions and price data, and those same apps can behave oddly on a new network with unfamiliar DNS or a hotel firewall blocking certain ports. The result looks like a wallet problem but is actually a network problem, which is where we come in.
Firmware updates on hardware wallets need a stable, uninterrupted USB connection for the whole process — usually 3 to 8 minutes depending on the device. Hotel wifi doesn't affect this directly since the update itself often flows over USB, but the companion app still needs internet to fetch the firmware package first, and a flaky captive portal connection (see our captive portal login loop guide if that's your issue) can cause the download to fail partway through, leaving the device in a half-updated state that throws a scary-looking error.
What we actually do: check that your laptop recognizes the device correctly (driver issues are common on hotel-loaner or newly-formatted laptops), confirm the USB cable and port are transferring data and not just charging, and make sure the Ledger Live or Trezor Suite app has a clean path to its update servers. What we never do: ask you to type your PIN or recovery phrase into anything other than the physical device itself. Every step that touches your keys happens on the hardware wallet's own screen, with your own fingers, with us watching only the parts of the screen that show connection status.
Software wallets pull balance and transaction data from RPC nodes and blockchain indexers over the internet, and a few things commonly break this after a country change: a VPN routing traffic through a server that a wallet's backend has rate-limited or blacklisted, a browser extension conflict after an auto-update installed while you were in transit, or simply a corrupted local cache that needs clearing. None of these require your seed phrase to fix — they're configuration and connectivity issues.

The single most common crypto scam targeting travelers is a fake "support agent" — sometimes impersonating a real wallet brand, sometimes posing as a helpful remote IT service exactly like ours — asking to "verify" your recovery phrase to "fix" a sync or login issue. There is no legitimate technical reason for anyone to ever need your seed phrase to solve a connectivity, firmware, or app problem. If a support agent asks for it, they are trying to steal your funds, full stop.
