Most e-signature platforms offer SMS-based identity verification as an extra security layer, especially for legal, financial, or immigration documents. That SMS is routed through a third-party telecom gateway the platform contracts with, and those gateways have highly uneven international coverage — some route reliably to certain countries and drop silently in others, particularly for prepaid or eSIM numbers, numbers on carriers the gateway doesn't have a direct relationship with, or numbers behind aggressive spam filtering common in parts of Southeast Asia, the Gulf, and Latin America. The platform's own status page almost never reflects this because from their side the SMS was "sent successfully" — it's the last-mile delivery to your specific carrier that failed, invisibly.
When SMS verification is stuck, the workaround built into most platforms (but rarely surfaced clearly in the UI) is a voice call verification fallback, or in DocuSign's case an authenticator-app option under advanced signing settings, if the sender enabled it. If the sender only configured SMS, you may need to contact them directly to change the verification method on their end — no amount of retrying will fix a gateway that structurally doesn't reach your number.

This tends to get worse abroad specifically because travelers are more likely to be on an unfamiliar browser profile, a borrowed device, or a fresh install without their usual extension whitelist configured — small differences from their home setup that are enough to break an embedded viewer that was working fine for months at home.
Most tech problems on the road are annoying but not urgent. A broken e-signature flow is different when the document is a visa sponsorship letter, an embassy appointment confirmation, a lease you need signed before a deposit deadline, or a client contract with a same-day turnaround clause. These documents are often single-use links that expire after a fixed window — sometimes 24 to 72 hours — and every failed attempt at loading or verifying eats into that window without necessarily telling you how much time is left. We've worked cases where a signer spent two days retrying the same broken SMS flow before realizing the link itself had already expired, which then required going back to the sender to reissue an entirely new envelope, restarting the clock.

Beyond SMS, higher-security envelopes (common for financial documents, notarized items, and some immigration paperwork) run knowledge-based authentication or ID-document verification steps that cross-reference your IP geolocation, device fingerprint, and sometimes a live selfie against a photo ID. Signing from a new country, especially through a VPN, changes enough of that fingerprint that some platforms silently downgrade your trust score and block the session rather than displaying a clear "verification failed, try again" message — you just see the signing page fail to progress past a certain step with no useful error text. Turning off a VPN for the specific duration of the signing session, and doing it on your actual physical location rather than a tunneled one, resolves a meaningful share of these cases, though it's not something most people think to try because the platform never suggests it.

First, check the envelope's actual expiration time in the original email (not just the reminder emails, which sometimes don't update the countdown) so you know how much runway you have. Second, disable any VPN or proxy for the signing session specifically, and try from a mainstream, up-to-date browser like current Chrome or Edge in a private/incognito window, which sidesteps most extension conflicts without you having to hunt down which extension is the culprit.
