Why This Happens More on the Road Than at Home

At home you use the same laptop, the same ports, and the same cable for months. Abroad, all three change at once: you buy a new laptop in a country where your old model wasn't sold, you borrow a USB-C hub from a hostel or coworking space, or you plug a drive that was formatted on a Mac into a Windows machine you picked up because your old one broke. Any one of those changes can make a perfectly healthy drive appear invisible, and when two or three happen in the same week — new country, new device, new cable — it's genuinely hard to tell which one caused it.

The other travel-specific factor is environmental damage to the port itself, not the drive. Beach sand, fine dust from unpaved roads, and moisture from humid climates get into USB-A and USB-C ports and either block the physical connection or corrode the contacts. exFAT vs NTFS vs APFS: The Silent Killer of Cross-Platform Drives

Windows formats drives in NTFS by default. macOS formats them in APFS or Mac OS Extended. Neither operating system can write to the other's native format without extra software, and older Windows versions can't even read APFS at all — the drive just won't appear in File Explorer, with no error message explaining why. exFAT is the one format both systems can read and write natively, which is exactly why we recommend it for any drive that crosses between a Mac and a Windows machine, which is common for nomads who replace a broken laptop with whatever brand is available locally.

Work through this in order, because each step rules out a cheaper and more common cause before you get to the scary ones. First, try the drive in a different port on the same laptop, and then in a completely different device if you have access to one — a friend's laptop, a hotel business center PC, anything. If it shows up on a second device, the problem is the port or the OS, not the drive. Second, check Disk Management on Windows (search "Create and format hard disk partitions") or Disk Utility on Mac — if the drive shows up there but not in File Explorer or Finder, it's a format or driver issue, and the drive itself is fine.

Third, physically inspect the port with a flashlight for visible dust, sand, or bent pins, and try gently blowing compressed air into it if you have access to any. Fourth, if you're using a hub, bypass it and connect directly to the laptop. Only after all four of these come back negative should you start considering that the drive's controller has actually failed, which is the one scenario that usually requires professional data recovery rather than a config fix.
