Van Life Internet Setup Issues: Router, Starlink & SIM Fixes

Router misconfiguration, wrong APN settings, failed carrier failover, and account-level throttling are all things we can log into your router or hotspot and resolve in a session. Why Signal Dies the Moment You Step Back Inside the Van

A steel or aluminum van body acts close enough to a Faraday cage that it matters — it attenuates cellular signal by roughly 20-30dB compared to open air, which is often the difference between two bars and zero. Fiberglass and composite panel vans leak far less signal than steel cargo vans like a Sprinter or Transit, which is why two people with the identical carrier and identical phone can have completely different experiences depending on what their rig is built on.

The remote-fixable part of this is making sure you're actually using an external antenna setup correctly, not just fighting the shell with brute signal strength. If you already have a roof-mounted MIMO antenna and a cellular router, we can check that the antenna cable pairs are wired to the correct ports (mixing up main/aux on a MIMO setup silently caps you at single-antenna performance), confirm the router is locked to the right band for your carrier, and verify the router isn't defaulting back to internal antennas when the external ones are connected. The Starlink app's obstruction map is more literal than most people treat it — a single branch crossing the dish's view can cause intermittent dropouts that look random but are actually a satellite pass timing out every few minutes at the same spot. In motion (RV/mobile plans), this gets worse because the dish is constantly re-tracking as you drive, so a boondocking spot that tested clean when you parked can degrade an hour later as the sun angle and satellite pass geometry shift.

What we can fix remotely: Starlink app configuration, prioritizing the right service line if you're on a multi-address or mobile-priority plan, checking whether you're accidentally still on a Residential/fixed plan that deprioritizes you once you leave your registered address, and network settings on anything connected downstream of the Starlink router (like a travel router bridging Starlink WiFi to your van's network). What we can't fix: physical obstruction, dish tilt, or mount vibration — those require you to walk outside and look at the sky.

Data Throttling After You Hit the 'Unlimited' Soft Cap

Most "unlimited" hotspot and phone plans marketed to RVers have an undisclosed or buried soft cap — commonly 25-50GB — after which the carrier deprioritizes your data during network congestion. It doesn't cut you off; it just makes you slow specifically in busy areas (campgrounds, national park entrances, town centers) while staying fast in empty stretches, which is exactly the pattern that convinces people their router is broken when it's actually a plan-tier throttle.

Multi-Carrier / Multi-SIM Router Failover That Won't Fail Over

Dual-SIM and multi-modem routers (Pepwave, Cradlepoint, Peplink) are supposed to switch to a working carrier automatically when the primary one drops, but in practice the failover logic often triggers on the wrong condition — it checks for a dead connection, not a slow or throttled one, so a badly congested-but-technically-connected primary SIM never releases control to the backup.

This is squarely in remote-fix territory: we can log into the router's admin panel, correct the failover thresholds (latency and packet-loss triggers instead of connection-state-only), fix SIM slot priority order, and make sure APN settings are correct for each carrier individually — a wrong APN on the secondary SIM is one of the most common reasons failover "works" but still shows no internet. If you're running two SIMs from the same underlying network (a lot of "different" carrier MVNOs ride the same towers), no router config will fix that — you need genuinely different infrastructure, which is a plan choice, not a settings issue. If it gets full bars and a stable connection outside but drops or degrades the moment it's back inside, the problem is physical — shielding, antenna placement, or dish obstruction — and no amount of router configuration will solve it.
